The Native Village of Akutan has applied for a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Grant to construct an access road to the small boat harbor. The proposed two-mile road is the surface transportation element of a $125 million regional transportation system serving the Bering Sea Fishery and Akutan, the nation’s second-largest seafood port.
This is a discretionary grant program that was part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis for development of surface transportation projects.

The City of Akutan, located on Akutan Island in the eastern Aleutians, has released its Airport Local Area Plan (A-LAP). The City is isolated due to limited transportation connections. Currently the City is accessible only by boat or amphibious aircraft. The only commercial aircraft serving Akutan is the 65-year old amphibious Grumman Goose aircraft that accommodates a maximum of eight passengers and minimal freight per flight. The aircraft must use visual flight rules and land in the water of Akutan Bay. Flights are frequently canceled. Continue reading
The City of Akutan, Alaska is seeing its first boat harbor being built on Akutan Island, located in the eastern part of the Aleutian Chain, about 790 miles southwest of Anchorage. Rugged Akutan Island is found in the midst of the rich Bering Sea fishing grounds and is home to Trident Seafoods, the largest frozen seafood processor in North America. This $31 million project is being funded with the help of the US Army Corps of Engineers and Aleutians East Borough.
Working to insure protection of the local environment, the harbor construction project at the head of Akutan Bay has produced a 12-acre of mooring basin and associated uplands that will serve local commercial fishermen and other marine related industries. This harbor development will provide mooring for up to 57 large fishing vessels, serve as a place of refuge for disabled craft, and add an important link in the community’s transportation network.
Akutan Harbor is posed to become an economic engine in the community. The City of Akutan welcomes creation of new businesses and industries that can take advantage of the facilities and uplands being created by construction of the harbor.
This website is meant to be a resource for those interested in the growth of this important project. News and documents related to the harbor will be posted here. Contact Akutan’s virtual harbormaster for more information on this effort.
