The City of Akutan successfully wrote a Denali Commission grant for fill material for the proposed two-mile road to the harbor at the head of the Bay. The road is the surface transportation element of a regional transportation system serving the Bering Sea Fishery and Akutan, the nation’s second-largest land-based seafood port.
The Tribe has also been proactive in engaging the Bureau of Indian Affairs Tribal Transportation Program. Planning funds have been used for road design and permitting. The Native Village of Akutan, in partnership with the Aleutians East Borough, is in engaged in the Akun Dock & Breakwater Project with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers the marine transportation portion connecting to the new airport.
